Every fuel station has fuel pumps or fuel dispenser to refill the motorists’ tank. It is one of these things gas stations cannot do without. These days, many gas stations are interested in buying used fuel pumps for sale. If these used items work properly, buying them will save a significant sum of money.
In this blog, we will discuss 5 different types of gasoline dispensers. Our focus will be restricted to their design and how they function. Mechanical Fuel Pumps Most mechanical fuel pumps are low-pressure types. However, they are sometimes used for high-pressure applications that move gasoline from the tank to the fuel bowl of the spark-ignition engine. Mechanical fuel pumps are of two types – plunger-type fuel pumps and diaphragm-type fuel pumps. Fuel Pumps with a Plunger This type imitates the action of a plunger to draw and distribute fuel. The plunger is seated within a cylinder. A push rod links one side of the plunger to the camshaft. The valves are fixed to the cylinder’s end. As the plunger moves backward, the fuel is sucked into the cylinder and when the plunger goes forward, the fuel is forced out of the cylinder. These pumps require heavy maintenance. The modern-day vehicles have switched to fuel injection system, thereby eliminating the need for these pumps. Fuel Pumps with Diaphragm This type works by expansion and compression of the diaphragm to suck and deliver fuel. The pump body comprises two one-way valves – intake valve and exit check valve. Compression of the diaphragm causes the pressure within the pump to drop below the atmospheric pressure and gasoline to be sucked through the inlet valve. Expansion of diaphragm does just the opposite by forcing the fuel out through the output valve. The mechanism of an eccentric cam motion activates a lever that controls expansion and contraction motion of the diaphragm. The eccentric cam, via a gearing arrangement, is linked to the engine crankshaft. Electric Fuel Pumps These pumps are integral to the fuel injection system commonly found in the contemporary automobiles. It creates high pressure to deliver fuel from the pump. The tremendous pressure might cause ignition of the gasoline in the pump, which could lead to an explosion. Therefore, it is important to keep electric fuel pump away from the engine for safety reasons. High Pressure Fuel Pumps These pumps are commonly used in combustion ignition engines to inject fuel directly into the combustion chamber. These pumps function at pressure higher than 200 Pacals. These pump systems are designed to manage high pressure. They can supply fuel to the combustion chamber without over-fuelling or making any waste.
